On my part I subben into EA Play within Steam for a month to test if it would work as a makeshift solution. If anything works out for me I'll let you know.
You're absolutely right, this is a completely nonsensical, silly, problem to be having. I'll keep trying to get in touch with Steam about it but if I can't get access to online components or multiplayer then the game's store page needs some sort of warning about this as it seems to be a common enough problem, given what I have read online so far.
Unless I'm blind, which is entirely possible given how numb my face has become from all this.
